When developing a site it is a good idea to plan everything out before you start developing. New web developers like to jump into their text editor and start programming. With doing any website brainstorming techniques for ideas. Why not? That is the fun part. But when doing this you find yourself changing things back and forth and trying different things. You don't really know what the finished product is or your end goal. You end up wasting a lot of time and if you’re on a job or working for someone, you wasting a lot of money. Finding Your Projects Theme, Service or Product
Most web developers when starting a project know what theme, service or products they will be developing for. You might not have all the information needed or desired. With some brainstorming techniques, this can help you come up with other information that you or the client might have not thought about. Instead of trying to think of something while staring at your computer screen, try to write it down. Start with writing simple words that are relative to the project you are working on. When you have brainstormed about 10 different topics on your sheet of paper, label them 1 through 10. Making 1 be your most interested releative topic and 10 to your least favorite less relative topic.
Find Something Your Interested In
With your 10 different relative ideas numbered 1-10. Get rid of 6-10. You might wonder why it took me for ever to come up with those. If they are below your top 5 there is a chance that you might get bored with them or they aren't very relative to the project. If you think you are going to get bored with one of your topics, Don't Do It. If you get bored with your topic, then the website is going to suffer. Your website will be more successful and you'll be more willing to put your time and effort into it.
Your Fav 5
Now you have your Fav 5 categories, now you can start breaking your fav 5 categories down into sub-categories. Such as: Your top category is Guitar. So what some sub-categories that can go with Guitar? Well there is Playing Guitar, Types of Guitars, Guitar Brands, Guitar Chords, Guitar Scales and even Guitar Hero. Easy Right? Doing this with all 5 categories you will find that there is more sub-categories to your topics than you might have thought. This brainstorming technique will also open niches to your sub-categories. You might find yourself wanting to do one of your category or sub categories niches than what you orginal thought of. This is perfectly fine to change your idea.
Your Sub-Categories / Niches
Finding multiple Categories, Sub-Categories or Niches for you website is important. You always want to think how your website can expand. You don't need to do all Categories off the bat. Take your time in making your website. It is more important to have solid high valued content, then a lot of content. With more Categories and Sub-Categories gives you the options to do both. Start with Category, work to Sub-Categories and build something great.
Brainstorming Techniques
